If you frequently experience throbbing pain on one side or both sides of your head, go through nausea and vomiting and become very sensitive to light and sounds, then you could be suffering from migraine.
Some possible causes of migraine may be environmental such as high temperatures, light, high humidity, weather changes, besides unhealthy lifestyle habits such as not eating on time, consuming certain types of cheese, chocolates, foods with monosodium glutamate, fermented foods.
Migraine may also be caused by nervous or neurological disorders such as epilepsy or Alzheimer’s. Certain medications and sensory stimuli such as perfumes, cigarettes or paint can also trigger migraine.
“Migraine starts with a pulsating/throbbing pain that builds up over time and becomes intense. Some other symptoms include feeling of nausea, discomfort with bright lights and loud sounds, neck stiffness, intense hunger, confusion and disorientation and feeling low or sad,” explains Dr Haresh Tolia.
How to cure a migraine headache
“While there are many ways to reduce symptoms of a migraine attack, it is a good idea to keep a diary of what may be triggering these. Eliminating these triggers is the first step towards curing migraines,” says Banagalore-based Dr Ramananda Srikantiah Nadig, head of the clinical advisory board, healthy.
1. Apply or inhale lavender oil as it is known to provide some relief from migraine and its symptoms.
2. Try opting for acupressure. In this technique, pressure is applied with fingers and hands to specific points on the body to relieve pain and other symptoms.
3. Eat ginger in some form. Ginger helps in reducing the severity and duration of migraine attacks.
4. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to headaches and migraines and therefore it is good for those with this condition to consume foods rich in magnesium. Some sources of magnesium include almonds, sesame and sunflower seeds, and cashews.
